You can find guidelines for treating stains on leather, however, the basic cleaning methods can alter the color or appearance of the leather so it is best to contact professions to take care of it for you, but there are some things you should know (“How,” 2009). Over time, leather will collect dirt and oils, which will break down the leathers protective coating. The removal of dirt and oils from leather will help maintain the moisture balance in the leather furniture, which will make it less likely to absorb spillages.
Finished leather can be cleaned by placing a small amount of a gentle, moisturizing soap, such as Dove, on a damp cloth. Bring it to a light lather and rub it on the leather without putting too much water on the leather. You will then wipe away lather with a fresh damp cloth. Be sure not to rinse the leather in water. Afterwards, polish the leather with a try towel and treat it with a leather conditioner.
When dealing with unfinished leather you are going to want to use a damp cloth or sponge to rub saddle soap into the leather and work soap into a light lather. Then wipe away lather and allow it to air dry. Lastly be sure to oil the leather with leather preservative, such as mink oil.
Cleaning leather is a skill, be sure if you use a professional service that they be qualified. For example, the employees at Payless Carpet Cleaners are trained with the Leather Training & Technical in Miami FL. When you visit any company’s website, they will list their qualification. It is great that they can be liable for damages, but would you really want to risk you materials you love?
